Part I: "The Early Days"

The humble house

In the annals of history, some of the most formidable structures had humble beginnings. This is the tale of one such building.

The search for a suitable location for this fledgling studio was long an arduous, making the Crusades and the Quest for the Holy Grail seem rather paultry in comparison. After much research and time, this humble abode was located in Brisbane's south.

Tape recorders

After the perfect residence was located, equipment was the next biggest concern. Two Otari MX5050 tape recorders were obtained from the Police where they had been previously used in interrogation rooms. The marks of the knife that was used to splice confession tapes together is clearly visible.

Walls

What followed next was wanton and callous destruction of private property (also known as renovation). Compaq monitors line the walls, which will be used as part of the Mastering Suite and global domination.

Wall frames

After tearing down the old walls, solid framework for new and improved walls was built. This is the controlroom in its infancy. Also note the Lotus in the background -- an unfinished project by its owner.

Plaster

Once the timber framework was up, the Firecheck plaster was applied in this attractive shade of mauve.

We are still looking for the people who walked across the walls.

Drill man
Will

Cleve Stevens from Atoned gets down and dirty to help with the construction. He shows not only is he Black & Decker drill proficient, but also incredibly fashionable with trendy Nike shoes.

Will plays with expensive looking amplifiers. He is happy about this.

Washing machine

The unfinished sound booth. For sale, one Kenwood washing machine. Good condition, only used once a week by little old rockers to clean their capes and outfits. $50 o.n.o.

Jude 22

Jude 22 takes time out of getting out of helping with the studio to play a few numbers. They say 'test drive'. We say 'bludge'.

Note: Jude 22 did actually do work. This is having fun with them. They have senses of humour. So I'm told.

Part II: "The Saga Continues"

Band room

Soon the structure was in place, but there was no rest for the intrepid Angel staff. It was time to get down to details.

Control room

First, those ugly brick walls had to go. After a crash course in rendering, Paul and Kat soon transformed them with an attractive rustic finish. This also made the recording room 3 db quieter - with the acoustic foam and double-glazed window in place, you can close your eyes and imagine you're in a padded cell... if that's what you really want.

Control room

But the control room still needed work. Those holes will never do - the bands will hear us talking about them! Paul the master carpenter to the rescue. Windows, wood panelling, a coat of paint, and some serious looking equipment and it's starting to look like the real thing.

Tape recorder

Paul traded in the Kenwood washing machine for this 16 track Lyrec 2 inch tape recorder. Excellent for recording, but needs work in the washing department.

Rack
Einstein mixer

Is this an FX rack, or a weapon of mass destruction? Paul says the Crown amp at the bottom can be used either way.

A state of the art Amek Einstein mixer. Only one previous owner who used it to make ambient music in the rainforest.

Will and patch bay
Bruce

Will takes an oath to dedicate the rest of his life to making a patchbay.

Bruce, our other audio guru, tunes the mixer, while looking for that missing bit of pizza.

Motley
Gemma and Motley

But instead finds a small Southern Figbird, obviously a refugee from the rainforest sessions. This Figbird, now nicknamed Motley, decided to move in in hope of furthering her singing career.

It didn't take Motley long to find a suitable nesting site.

Garage door

What lurks behind this innocent garage door, and what is its fate?

Part III: "Final Destiny"

Having achieved a fully functional audio studio, the team branches into video production...

Front door
Front door

With the addition of a shiny new window, many bands can now see themselves recording at Angel Studios. Now that the studio has been established for a couple of years, we have managed to mow the lawn, and move the car to the other side of the driveway.

Drums

In one corner, we created a natural habitat suitable for drummers and soon managed to lure in several fine specimens. We hope to instigate a breeding programme soon.

Watering hole

With the addition of a water supply and a coffee supply to the habitat groups of audio engineers and related species have now been seen gathering at the water hole.

Far superior

Hearing about the legendary Angel Studios, heavy metal band Farsuperior migrated from a distant island known as New Zealand to Brisbane to record their rock video clip.

Far superior through window

From the engineer's point of view it looks like Farsuperior's clip will be a hit. Drummer Kevin Clare is now looking to further his acting career, appearing as 'Cookie' in Angel Studio's next release, Redemption 101, an out of this world sci fi movie.

Motley with card
Boom pole operator

After much practice, Motley's singing voice has improved. While waiting to crack the elusive RnB market, she works part-time waitressing and handing out business cards.

Meanwhile, Stephanie trains as a boom-pole operator while waiting for her big break.

The Holy Grail

While cleaning up the studio, we discovered the holy grail behind a piano.
